UCB Power and Powin expand energy storage in Brazil

UCB Power, a leading Brazilian energy storage solutions provider, and Powin, a U.S.-based global energy storage integrator, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic partnership. The goal is to scale Brazil’s utility-scale energy storage market (30MW+), addressing the increasing demand for reliable solutions that support the expansion of renewable energy and grid stability in the country.

Brazil is set to launch its first Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCAP) dedicated exclusively to energy storage in 2025, a major step toward modernizing the power sector. This initiative aims to enhance operational flexibility and support the efficient integration of renewable sources. By combining their expertise, UCB and Powin will deliver scalable, proven, and locally optimized energy storage solutions tailored to Brazil’s energy needs.

Combining Expertise to Accelerate Energy Transition

UCB brings extensive experience in the Brazilian energy sector, with deep regulatory knowledge and strong market development capabilities. With a Giga-Factory in Manaus and an established commercial presence, the company has manufactured over 120 million lithium batteries and delivered more than 65,000 remote off-grid systems. This positions UCB as a key player in driving energy storage solutions in Brazil.

Powin, on the other hand, is a global leader in energy storage system integration. With a track record of delivering over 17 GWh of projects worldwide, Powin provides solutions built on its Pod hardware platform and proprietary StackOS software, ensuring reliable performance, efficiency, and scalability.

Impact on the Future of Brazil’s Energy Sector

According to Marcelo Rodrigues, Sales & Innovation VP at UCB, this partnership is a strategic step for Brazil:

“The demand for utility-scale energy storage in Brazil is set to grow exponentially as we transition to renewable energy and strengthen the power grid. This partnership with Powin reinforces our commitment to bringing world-class solutions to the Brazilian market, tailored to local needs.”

Mark Babcock, CRO at Powin, emphasized the collaboration’s significance:

“As a global leader in BESS, we are excited to partner with UCB to unlock the full potential of Brazil’s energy storage market. Our proprietary technology and supply chain expertise, combined with UCB’s local presence and regulatory knowledge, will set a new benchmark for utility-scale energy storage in the region.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Energy Storage in Brazil

With the upcoming LRCAP 2025 auction expected to attract significant investments in energy storage, UCB and Powin’s partnership is positioned to shape the future of Brazil’s power sector. By combining technological innovation and local expertise, the companies aim to provide reliable, scalable, and cost-effective energy storage solutions to support Brazil’s ambitious renewable energy and grid resilience goals.
