Natura and Bioverse Use Xmobots Drones for Amazon Mapping

During the ANPEI Innovation Conference 2024, held on August 21 and 22, Natura announced a strategic partnership with Bioverse for an innovative forest mapping project in the Amazon, utilizing drones from Xmobots, the world’s sixth-largest drone company.

This collaboration aims to revolutionize forest inventory and species identification by leveraging advanced drones and artificial intelligence.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Amazon Preservation

Xmobots, known for its expertise in high-tech drones, presented the Nauru 500C, which will be the primary tool used by Bioverse for forest data collection.

Artur Lioni, Environmental Project Coordinator at Xmobots, emphasized the importance of this technology:

“We go into the field, conduct drone flights, and select the best camera and lens to ensure the most accurate species identification possible.”

This innovative approach surpasses the limitations of satellites, which still lack the resolution needed for a detailed inventory.

Impact on the Bioeconomy and Productive Chains

Bioverse, which acquired the Nauru 500C, will use the drone to identify, through artificial intelligence, key species used by Natura in cosmetics production.
Francisco D’Elia, Executive Director of Bioverse, highlighted the significance of this nearly two-year partnership with Xmobots:

“We have opened a new frontier in non-timber forest inventory, focusing on promoting the bioeconomy and structuring productive chains.”

Support for Innovation and Sustainability

The project also received financial support from FINEP. Fernanda Stiebler, Superintendent of Decentralized Operations at FINEP, praised the collaboration between the companies:

“Innovation happens when smaller companies, which have the technology, partner with larger companies, which have the ability to test and scale.”

She pointed to this partnership as a successful example of developing innovative projects.

Amazon Preservation at an Exponential Scale

Rômulo Zamberlan, Head of Advanced Research at Natura, emphasized the impact of this partnership on Amazon preservation and sustainable development. He noted that, with drone technology, the forest inventory process, which previously took nine months, can now be completed in just one day.

“We have accelerated the forest inventory process by 200 times,” said Zamberlan, expressing optimism about the next steps in this collaboration.

A New Chapter in Sustainable Bioeconomy

This collaboration marks a significant step in Amazon preservation and the advancement of a sustainable bioeconomy. By integrating cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence, these companies are redefining the role of innovation in conserving natural resources and valuing the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest.

This partnership is expected not only to accelerate forest mapping but also to set a new standard for sustainability projects, where technology and nature work together for a better future.
