Jinko ESS and UCB Power partner to produce BESS in Brazil
Jinko ESS has partnered with UCB Power to serve Brazil’s battery energy storage system (BESS) market. The initial focus is the capacity reserve auctions expected in December: UCB will assemble the equipment in Brazil, enabling the solution to compete both in the local-content auction and in the lot that permits imported equipment. The partnership combines Jinko’s technology — and its reported 2 GWh of installed and operating systems in Latin America — with UCB’s industrial capacity and more than five decades of battery-manufacturing experience.
The first localization route under the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) methodology will be implemented at UCB’s plant in Extrema, Minas Gerais. The companies may also evaluate alternatives at the Manaus facility as demand develops. Potential annual output is estimated at between 1.5 GWh and 4.5 GWh, depending on the production route and number of shifts; actual expansion will depend on auction demand, contracted projects and order volumes.
For the projects it plans to supply, Jinko is preparing the 6.25 MWh SunTera G3 container, now in the final stages of certification. The design increases energy density without changing the container’s external dimensions. Shipments are expected to begin in the first half of 2027, with initial deliveries in the second half, supporting the requirement for auction projects to become operational by August 2028. Beyond the auction, the partnership also plans to address larger commercial and industrial applications in Brazil.
