Amazon Community to Receive Sodium Batteries for Energy Storage

UCB Power will implement the first project utilizing sodium batteries for energy storage in remote communities in September

UCB Power, a manufacturer of energy storage solutions for stationary applications, portable devices, and batteries for electric mobility, will roll out the first project utilizing sodium batteries for energy storage in remote communities in September. Developed in partnership with the Sustainable Amazon Foundation, the system will be installed in the Tumbira Community, benefiting around 140 riverine inhabitants located in the municipality of Iranduba (Amazonas).

The company states that this is an unprecedented project for isolated systems in Brazil. According to UCB Power, sodium is a highly promising alternative due to its abundance, lower cost compared to other sources, and the ease of recycling the batteries. Another advantage of sodium batteries is their ability to operate efficiently under wider thermal ranges, which is a key factor for predominantly hot regions like Tumbira.

The project involves the installation of 16 sodium batteries, each with 48 volts and 50 amperes, capable of storing the equivalent of 38.4 kWh. The stored energy will help supply power to a municipal school, a health post, and community recreational areas serving the approximately 30 families living in the area. The operational cost is expected to be 30% lower compared to a lithium battery system.
